Meet Denise. She lives in Hong Kong and designs a fresh new brand called A for Apple that is just beginning to merge into the European & US markets.
What’s a Mom / Are you a Mom? To me, a mom has a world of responsibility to provide unconditional love to their children and I am not there yet!
Ups and Downs of being a Mom? I guess these days it’s about finding the balance between work and family. I see that with my sister.
What inspires or motivates you? your designs? other designers? I am inspired by everything I see and people I meet. Traveling really helps as I am creatively more productive when I am away.
What made you interested in making clothes for children? I have always been very inspired by kids. They are smart, cool, simple and easy to dress as they look good with everything. I really really love working with kids.
What is your dream situation for A for Apple? Remain local? Go global? In a retail perspective, going global would be ideal. But I want to keep the collection very focused. We love to do special projects and work with amazing people.
Any good tips or places that you recommend in HK for Mum? The shopping is great in Hong Kong so do come with an empty suitcase. There are so much shopping in HK! In some areas, malls are all connected and you find yourself staying indoor for the whole day. My favorite malls are Pacific Place, IFC and Harbour City. For more local/ one of a kind designers, my favorite is Rise Commercial Building where you find the smaller shops with the greatest finds. I also love to go to Patterson Street as my favorite shops are there like i.t. and Liger.
And the food! This is what I miss the most when I’m traveling.
Hong Kongers love to eat and the city has so much to offer. The local food is like nowhere else. It’s pretty much like eating pasta in Italy, it just tastes different. The must try places are Australia Dairy Company (best cantonese style egg sandwiches), Sing Heung Yuen ( Best doll noodles and milk tea), Sister Wah ( beef brisket noodles) and Tung Bo at the North Point Wet Market ( best seafood). Our favorite dim sum place is Dim Sum in Happy Valley, it’s very good and inexpensive.
Any good tips or places that you recommend in HK for kids? There are tons to do for kids. Hong Kong has nice beaches, parks and hiking trails. My favorite beaches are the remote ones which you have to either hike or travel by boat around the Sai Kung Area. I like Repulse Bay too as it’s very close….it’s actually quite nice when it’s not busy. A good hike is Dragon’s Back. The view is phenomenal and it’s the best way to get away from the busy city. I also like to hike around Lamma Island as you can reward yourself with some local seafood after.
At the end of the day, there is always Disneyland…
